Michael Ballack: Arsenal’s Mesut Özil should have stayed at Real Madrid
Chelsea legend Michael Ballack believes Arsenal star Mesut Özil should have stayed longer at Real Madrid
Michael Ballack believes Arsenal club-record signing Mesut Ozil should have fought harder to salvage his Real Madrid career.
The Germany international completed a £42.5m move to the north London side from los Blancos last summer, ending a three-year stay at the Champions League winners.
A player like him with his ability should show a reaction, but he never was the strongest player in terms of fighting, body language
The 25-year-old quit Madrid after reportedly feeling undervalued by the Spanish side, despite Cristiano Ronaldo expressing his dissatisfaction at his team-mate’s exit.
Ozil, who scored five goals last season, has been coming under increasing criticism after struggling to find the form that he produced in the early stages of his Arsenal career.
And Chelsea legend Ballack feels Ozil lacks fighting spirit at times, pointing to his unhappy final season at Madrid.
“A player like him with his ability should have tried to stay longer at Real Madrid,” Ballack told Sky Sports News. “That is my opinion. You could see there was a little bit trouble, a little bit moaning. I think he played well but you need time to adapt at a club.
