Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Monaco striker Radamel Falcao on loan, according to reports in the British media.

The Colombia international, who has been linked with Arsenal and Manchester City this summer, is expected to travel to the Red Devils to undergo a medical ahead of a potential 11m loan move to the 20-time English champions.

Unsurprisingly, reports of Falcao’s imminent move to United prompted a huge Twitter reaction from the professionals, past and present.

Former Liverpool midfielder David Thompson (@77thomo) expects Falcao to join Liverpool: “Falcao will go to arsenal today for sure bright lights big city loads of cash Champions League game over”

Ex-United defender Danny Higginbotham (@Higginbotham05) hails an outstanding signing: “If Manchester United sign Falcao this transfer window will of been an outstanding one for them. I’m sure there will be plenty leaving to”

Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore (@StanCollymore) gives an insight into some of the behind scenes activity: “Makes sense Falcao agent touting client to both Manchester clubs. Bumps wages up. Looking like #MUFC final destination for Colombian.”

Jan Aage Fjortoft (@JanAageFjortoft) wonders why Falcao is happy to settle without Champions League football: “Man UTD not in the ChampionsLeague, but still attractive of course. Remember: Last season Mendes took Falcao to Monaco. No CL there either”

England bowler Ryan Sidebottom (@RyanSidebottom) is thrilled with the signing: “Falcao to United # YouBeauty :) #Justsaying”

United legend Paul McGrath (@Paulmcgrath5) is getting carried away as the former defender tips Cristiano Ronaldo to return: “Falcao heading to Man Utd. CLF and Messi And Ronaldo will want to join the Q Lv it!”

Ex-United defender Philip Neville (@fizzer18) revels in the misery of a United supporter: “RT ‘@spencermorgan93: I feel sick #falcao’ Hahahaahhaahahahahahahahahahahahahahhaahhaahahahhahahahaahahahahhahahahahaahhaahahahahahaahahha”

Sky Sports presenter Hayley McQueen (@HayleyMcQueen) sheds more light on the deal: “There we have it, #mufc set to sign Monaco striker Radamel Falcao on a season-long loan, according to Sky sources. #SkyDeadlineDay”

Finally, former Soccer AM presenter Andy Goldstein (‏@andygoldstein05) wants Van Gaal to sign a defender: “Falcao! Didn’t see that one coming ! Great signing. Just one more pls, holding midfield and it’s top 4 guaranteed”
