Mesut Ozil answered his critics with a 30th-minute strike at Villa Park as Arsenal stormed into a 3-0 half-time lead.

Gunners manager Arsene Wenger was forced to defend the Germany international on Friday after growing criticism of the 25-year-old’s disappointing early-season performances.

But Ozil answered his critics with his first Premier League strike of the season before Danny Welbeck netted his inaugural Gunners goal and Aly Cissokho put the ball into his own net.

Here is a selection of the best Twitter reaction to Ozil’s strike – and Arsenal’s three goals in less than four minutes.

Celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) hails their club-record signing: “There’s our superstar @RobbieSavage8 ….. #Mesut”

Ex-Leicester City man Robbie Savage (@RobbieSavage8) responds to Morgan’s tweet: “Get a goal, and it’s that man ozil 1-0 arsenal great finish @bbc606 and it’s 2 welbeck.”

Jan Aage Fjortoft (@JanAageFjortoft) is pleased to see Ozil answer his critics on the pitch: “Özil finds the right answer. Scoring a goal!! Happy for him !!! #AFC”

Chelsea legend Mario Melchiot (@MarioMelchiot) is mesmerised by the £42.5m man’s goal: “#ozil made that look easy! #AVLARS #mmlove”

Ex-Liverpool winger Ryan Babel (@Ryanbabel) is quick to praise Welbeck: “Great goal Welbeck…”

Aston Villa legend Ian Taylor (@IanTaylor7) isn’t happy with the defending for the goals: “Ozil…….. 0-1 then Welbeck 0-2…..before I finished the tweet!!! Poor goals. #AVFC 0 #AFC 2.”

Golfer and Arsenal fan Ian Poulter (@IanJamesPoulter) is thrilled to see Ozil delivering for the Gunners: “Come on Arsenal that’s how to do it. Ozil then Welbeck set up by Ozil. That’s how you should deliver Ozil… Just like that. #BOOM”

Arsenal legend Ray Parlour (‏@RealRomfordPele) heaps praise on the goalscorers: “3 0 Arsenal. Come on great play from Welbeck for the 1st goal. Ozil returns the assist for the 2nd. Shocking OG for the 3rd”

Finally, Arsenal legend Ian Wright (‏@IanWright0): “COYG !!! Oh Danny boy…..”
