Lukas Podolski has paid tribute to one of his footballing heroes after Brazil legend Ronaldo celebrated his birthday on Thursday.

The former Real Madrid and AC Milan star turned 38 this week after hanging up his playing boots back in 2011.

Arsenal forward Podolski is a keen admirer of the World Cup winner and took to Instagram to wish Ronaldo a happy birthday.

The Germany international posted the picture above on Instagram and wrote: “38 years ago a star was born, best I have ever seen, my idol and childhood hero, the one who inspired me to become a professional football player.

“Happy birthday #Legend #Fenomeno #R9 #Best #Poldi #aha #Ronaldo #HappyBirthday”

Ronaldo scored 62 goals in 98 games for Brazil between 1994 and 2011.
