Jack Wilshere appears in high spirits despite a disappointing result in Dortmund after enjoying a “club day” with Arsenal team-mates Wojciech Szczesny and Olivier Giroud.

The England international was unable to help the north London side avoid a comprehensive 2-0 loss to Borussia Dortmund in their opening Champions League Group D clash on Tuesday.

Wilshere’s night got worse, too, as the 23-year-old had to be substituted in the second half after hurting his much-maligned ankle, prompting fears that he could be set for another period on the sidelines.

But Arsenal supporters will be reassured by the site of Wilshere posing alongside Gunners goalkeeper Szczesny and injured striker Giroud, who is nursing a foot injury of his own.

Following Tuesday’s loss, Wilshere promised that Arsenal would bounce back ahead of their trip to high-flying Aston Villa on Saturday.

“We’ll bounce back. Our next Champions League game [against Galatasaray on 1 October] is at home and hopefully we’ll get the three points,” Wilshere told the London Evening Standard.

“It’s never nice to lose a game – we wanted to come here and win – but that was our first Champions League group game.”
