Liverpool were remarkable 14-13 winners on penalties against Middlesbrough to book their place in the Capital One Cup fourth round.

The Reds had made the perfect start following their loss at Upton Park last Saturday as 17-year-old debutant Jordan Rossiter broke the deadlock with a long-range shot in the 10th minute.

However, Middlesbrough star Adam Reach levelled in the 62nd minute to force extra-time at Anfield, with Spanish midfielder Suso restoring the home side’s lead in the 109th minute.

But Patrick Bramford scored a last-gasp spot-kick to edge the third-round clash into a nervy penalty shootout, which the Reds edged 14-13 after Albert Adomah fired wide of Simon Mignolet’s goal.

“It was very important to get a result and the players are very happy in the changing room, Rodgers said.

“We’re in the hat and that’s all we want. This won’t affect us for the derby with Everton at the weekend. That’s a big game for us, we need to get our league season up and running.”
