Mario Balotelli was among the footballers to take to Instagram to mark the 13th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks with a tribute to the victims.

Over 2,900 people died in four coordinated terrorist attacks launched by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda upon the United States in 2001.

Liverpool striker Balotelli posted the picture above, along with the message: “RIP to those innocent people who lost their lives on #911. My prayers goes out to anyone affected. #NeverForget #September11”

Schalke star Kevin-Prince Boateng also posted a picture, writing: “My thoughts today are with all of the family and innocent victims of the 9/11 RIP #NeverForget”

Liverpool striker Fabio Borini wrote: “Always remembered.. 9/11 #remember911”

USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan also added: “We will never forget those who lost their lives 13 yrs ago and the men and women who continue to protect our country! #NeverForget #9/11”
