The 25-year-old suffered the thigh problem in training on Friday and underwent a scan before being sent back to Liverpool for treatment.
Sturridge posted a picture on his account, with the message: “The struggle you’re in today is developing the strength you need for tomorrow”.
“Absolutely gutted I can’t play,” Sturridge wrote on Instagram. “Injury is the worst part of football and the hardest thing to deal with mentally.
“I’m genuinely heartbroken right now. God willing I’m back in action for LFC very soon. Love to all the fans. Wish I could be there with my team mates.”
Sturridge has made a bright start to the Premier League season after scoring Liverpool’s winner to seal a 2-1 victory over Southampton in their opening game.
He also played a key role in his side’s first strike in the 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane last weekend.
