Lucas Leiva was clearly in a philosophical mood after Liverpool’s surprise 1-0 defeat by Aston Villa on Saturday evening.

The Brazilian midfielder was an unused substitute for the Reds as Brendan Rodgers’ men were condemned to defeat by Gabriel Agbonlahor’s early goal at Anfield.

Lucas posted the picture of himself above on Instagram and wrote: “The road is narrow and long but the victory is certain.”

The 27-year-old’s future was the subject of speculation over the summer but a move away from Merseyside failed to materialise.

He has been limited to just one Premier League appearance so far this season for the Reds.

Lucas, who has 24 Brazil caps to his name, joined Liverpool from Grêmio for £5m back in 2007 and was linked with a switch to Serie A side Napoli in the recent transfer window.
