Lucas Leiva hailed Liverpool’s thrilling Capital One Cup third-round victory after the Reds beat Middlesbrough 14-13 in a dramatic penalty shootout at Anfield.

Boro midfielder Adam Reach cancelled out Jordan Rossiter’s first Liverpool goal on his debut to help the Championship side force extra-time.

Suso appeared to have won the tie for the home side in the 109th minute, but Patrick Bamford netted a last-gasp penalty to force a shootout before Albert Adomah missed the crucial spot-kick.

Brazil international Lucas was forced to take two spot-kicks in the shootout but the 27-year-old held his nerve to play his part in Liverpool’s win as Brendan Rodgers’s side edged into the fourth round.

Lucas posted on his Instagram page: “What a game!!! Que jogo!!! YNWA”

Following the League Cup win, Rodgers stressed that his Liverpool side would be ready for their vital clash against Merseyside derby rivals Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday.

“This won’t affect us for the derby with Everton at the weekend. That’s a big game for us, we need to get our league season up and running,” Rodgers said.
