Wayne Rooney has admitted Manchester United needed their first Premier League win after a morale-boosting 4-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers.

The Red Devils sealed an emphatic win against the newly-promoted side after goals from Angel di Maria, Ander Herrera, Rooney and Juan Mata at Old Trafford.

It marked Louis van Gaal’s first competitive victory in charge of United after agreeing a three-year deal to take over the reins of the Red Devils in May.

And Rooney, who has scored two Premier League goals, is looking forward to United’s next top-flight game against Leicester City next Sunday.

“Great performance yesterday, needed that. Looking forward to next game,” Rooney posted on Instagram.

28-year-old Rooney was named United’s new captain following the departure of long-serving Red Devils skipper Nemanja Vidic to Inter Milan this summer.

United are ninth in the Premier League table after back-to-back draws against Burnley and Sunderland following an opening day defeat by Swansea City.
