Photo: Mario Balotelli revels in Liverpool's nervy 2-1 victory over Ludogorets at Anfield in the Champions League
Mario Balotelli joined fellow goal-scorer Steven Gerrard for a celebratory Liverpool photo after the pair helped the Reds beat Ludogorets 2-0 at Anfield.
The Italy international broke the deadlock in their Champions League opener with eight minutes remaining as he collected Alberto Moreno’s past before swivelling and firing past Canadian goalkeeper Milan Borjan.
However, Ludogorets forward Paulos Dani Alaino denied Balotelli a match-winning European performance for the Reds after the Bulgarians equalised in the 90th minute.
But reliable Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard scored his 40th goal in all European competitions to wrap up three valuable points and leave the Reds second in Champions League Group D.
“@stevengerrard ! Yes ! Good start guys! Thanks supporters! YOU WERE AMAZING!” Balotelli posted on Instagram.
Following the win, Gerrard lavished praise on Balotelli: “You have to give Mario Balotelli credit, he is under the spotlight and everyone is waiting for that first goal.
“It didn’t go his way for long periods but the sign of a good goal-scorer is to keep going and it only takes once chance and he showed that tonight.
“But what is more important than the goal is his work-rate. Myself and the rest of the lads were waiting to see what he would give the team, and he ran his socks off. That is the biggest plus for me.”
