Wayne Rooney hailed a top team performance as England got their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign off to a flying start with a 2-0 victory in Switzerland.

After a goalless first half, Arsenal new-boy Danny Welbeck finished off a swift move to give the visitors a 59th-minute lead in Basel.

The 23-year-old forward then added a second in stoppage time with a cool finish as Roy Hodgson’s men sealed a deserved victory.

And England captain Rooney took to Instagram after the game to praise his side’s efforts.

Rooney posted the picture above, and wrote: “Good @england team performance tonight and great to start our European campaign off with a win.”

Speaking to ITV Sport, Rooney added: “We defended well as a team and took our chances, catching them on the break with the speed we had been hoping to show.

“We have worked on springing from defence to attack which you saw tonight. It was a happy performance from us.”
