Scotland were denied a famous draw with world champions Germany after Thomas Muller scored a 70th-minute winner in the Euro 2016 qualifying opener.

The Bayern Munich forward had given Joachim Low’s side a first-half lead before Watford midfielder Ikechi Anya levelled with 34 minutes remaining at Signal Iduna Park.

However, Gordon Strachan’s side failed to hang on for a credible point after Muller netted a winner 20 minutes from time to ensure the World Cup holders made a perfect start to the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign.

“At 1-1, I genuinely believed we were going to win the game,” said Strachan. “I saw players playing with no fear.”

The Scotland manager added: “The Germans are always going to have more of the ball and probably more chances, that goes without saying.

“If you could find me somebody who’s 6′ 4”, who can head the ball for miles and jump at eight feet, which Muller can, then it’s avoidable.”
