Per Mertesacker said his official goodbyes to the Germany national team on Wednesday after retiring following his country’s World Cup win.
The Arsenal defender helped Joachim Low’s side triumph in Brazil in July before opting to call time on his international career.
The 29-year-old was joined by Philipp Lahm and Miroslav Klose, who also hung up their Germany boots in the wake of the World Cup.
The trio were presented with plaquettes after international friendly match between Germany and Argentina at Esprit-Arena in Duesseldorf on Wednesday, which the visitors won 4-2.
Before his trip to Germany, Mertesacker admitted that it still felt “unreal” to be a world champion.
“Tomorrow I will be travelling to Düsseldorf to get my official farewell from the German National Team,” Mertesacker wrote on Facebook.
“And sometimes it still feels unreal to be a World Champion … but I am looking forward to a personal good bye to fall fans tomorrow in the stadium.”
