Wayne Rooney doesn’t need any finishing tips as the Manchester United striker closes in on Sir Bobby Charlton’s record haul, but Michael Owen is well-placed to offer the England captain some advice.
The former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker was an interested viewer at St George’s Park training ground as the Three Lions geared up for their opening Euro 2016 qualifier against Switzerland on Monday night.
Owen, who scored 40 goals in 89 appearances for the Three Lions, played alongside Rooney for three seasons at Old Trafford, ending his long wait to get his hands on a Premier League winner’s medal in 2011.
The former England international will be best remembered on the international stage for his superb solo goal against Argentina at World Cup 1998, although Glenn Hoddle’s side lost to the South American on penalties in the knockout stage.
And the 34-year-old was present at Three Lions training as he greeted his former England and United team-mate Rooney, who was recently named as Steven Gerrard’s successor as captain of Hodgson’s side.
Owen was at St George’s Park as an FA Ambassador to promote the partnership between The FA and the Afghanistan FA.
