Tony Fernandes spoke of his relief at Niko Kranjcar’s deadline day signing after the Croatian playmaker rescued a point for Queens Park Rangers against Stoke City.

The former Portsmouth and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder scored an 88th-minute equaliser to secure what could prove to be a valuable point and hold the Potters to a 2-2 draw.

Mark Hughes, returning to Loftus Road after being sacked in November 2012, had seen his side take the lead twice through Mame Biram Diouf and Peter Crouch.

Steven Caulker had levelled before half-time, before Kranjcar, who sealed a return to the west London side on 1 September, netted a stunning equaliser with two minutes remaining.

Fernandes, who sanctioned the signings of centre-halves Caulker and Rio Ferdinand this summer, added that QPR must improve their defensive record after conceding 11 goals in five Premier League games.

Harry Redknapp’s side face a tricky trip to St Mary’s to face Southampton in their next Premier League outing.
