Liverpool edged to a 2-1 Champions League victory over Ludogorets thanks to Steven Gerrard’s stoppage-time penalty at Anfield.

Brendan Rodgers’s side had taken an 82nd-minute lead after Mario Balotelli’s first Liverpool goal, only for Ludogorets forward Dani Abalo to equalise as the Group D clash crept into added time.

However, Gerrard dispatched a last-gasp penalty to seal three points – and here is a selection of the best Twitter reaction from the professionals, past and present, in chronological order to a dramatic Reds win.

Former Liverpool defender Neil Ruddock (@RealRazor) tips a comfortable victory for the home side: “3-0 to the Red Men”

Meanwhile, Darren Eadie (@eadie11) feels sorry for Reds supporters tuned into ITV: “Just what #Liverpool need for an exciting night back in #ChampionsLeague after 5 years…… Andy Townsend”

Cult hero Luis Garcia (@LuchoGarcia14) enjoys a crowd favourite tune dedicate to the miniature Liverpool cult hero: “#Sangriasong at Anfield… The goals are coming!!!”

Reds legend Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) urges Liverpool fans to be patient with Brendan Rodgers’s side: “Always felt a fast start in European games at Anfield was important but patience as important.”

Ajax forward Ryan Babel (@Ryanbabel) hopes Balotelli’s strike can prompt a goal flurry for the new signing: “Balo needed it… #ynwa”

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge (@D_Sturridge) insists it is the result and not the performance that matters: “Well done boys!! We got the job done in the end. 3 points is all that matters. #ChampionsLeague #redordead”

Finally, a member of the 2005 squad Neil Mellor (@NeilMellor33) praises the Reds skipper: “Left it late but a victory for LFC in the opening champions league game! Stevie G showing complete calmness to slot the pen in injury time!”
