Theo Walcott faces fight to win back Arsenal place, says Gunners legend
Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn warns Gunners forward Theo Walcott that he faces a fight for a first-team place
Nigel Winterburn has warned Theo Walcott that he won’t make an immediate return to the Arsenal starting line-up.
The England international is close to a return from a knee injury which kept the 25-year-old sidelined in the second half of last season.
Theo is a player I really like, he’s got genuine pace, his goalscoring ability is very, very good
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger signed Chile international Alexis Sanchez in a £35m deal from Barcelona in the summer transfer window.
And former Arsenal left-back Winterburn says Walcott will need to prove his worth before earning a spot in Wenger’s side.
“I’m not sure Walcott will come straight back into the side,” Winterburn told talkSPORT.
“If you remember at the start of last season he was injured and came off the bench a lot and had a massive impact.
“Eventually, though, he will come back into the team. Theo is a player I really like, he’s got genuine pace, his goalscoring ability is very, very good.
“I think he’ll eventually come in on the right wing, and with Olivier Giroud out for a while it means Welbeck can play on his own up front, with maybe Sanchez going over to the left.
“With that front three, that’s how I see Arsenal’s best formation going forward, even when everyone is fit.”
