Manchester United are waiting to learn the seriousness of Jonny Evans’ injury after the defender left Sunday’s shock 5-3 defeat by Leicester City on crutches.

The Northern Ireland international was substituted in the 30th minute at the King Power Stadium after picking up what appeared to be an ankle problem in the first half.

We can manage. But it’s a thin choice

Louis van Gaal

“I don’t know how bad Evans is,” said Van Gaal. “We may have to wait for a scan but he is on crutches.”

Van Gaal also conceded that Manchester United’s defensive options are now severely limited.

“I think that Luke Shaw shall be fit enough to play. Marcos Rojo can play and Chris Smalling can play, so we can manage. But it’s a thin choice.”

United are 12th in the Premier League table after having taken just five points from their opening five games.

The Red Devils host West Ham United in their next Premier League game on Saturday.
