Wayne Rooney has backed Raheem Sterling to be a “massive player” for Liverpool and England in the seasons to come.

The teenager has emerged as one of England and Liverpool’s brightest prospects in the past year after enjoying a breakthrough season at Anfield under Brendan Rodgers last term.

He’ll be a massive player for us for the next 10-15 years and unfortunately, for Liverpool

And England captain Rooney has drawn comparisons between the 19-year-old and former Arsenal star Marc Overmars.

“He’s a fantastic player. You saw that last season and with the start to this season,” Rooney said.

“He’s an unusual player. He can play right across the front line, out wide.

“I sat down with him before the World Cup and showed him videos of Marc Overmars. He reminded of of him. I think he has the potential to be as good as Overmars.

“He’ll be a massive player for us for the next 10-15 years and unfortunately, for Liverpool.”
