Manuel Pellegrini could not hide his delight at Manchester City’s dominant display as they thrashed Sheffield Wednesday 7-0 to reach the fourth round of the League Cup.

On-loan signing Frank Lampard scored twice as City romped to victory at Etihad Stadium to set up a clash with Newcastle United next month.

City scored 156 goals under Pellegrini last season as they won their second Premier League title in three seasons.

And Pellegrini was thrilled with his side’s free-scoring performance on Wednesday night.

“I really enjoyed that because tonight we saw the team that we were used to seeing last year,” Pellegrini told BBC Sport.

“We have not been scoring so many goals at home so it is the first game we have returned to the team that everyone saw here last year.

“It is important to try to retain the trophy but the most important thing tonight was to play like we did.”
