Per Mertesacker did not play in Arsenal’s League Cup defeat by Southampton due to a minor gluteus injury, Arsene Wenger has revealed.

The centre-half was an unused substitute as Wenger’s men slumped to a 2-1 third-round loss to the Saints at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.

And Wenger revealed that he opted to rest the World Cup winner, despite the player declaring himself ready to feature.

“Before the last game at Villa he had a little gluteus problem,” said Wenger of Mertesacker. “He declared himself fit but at the moment we are so short that it’s difficult [to play him] with the games he plays.

“We have to play on Saturday against Tottenham and then an important game on Wednesday against Galatasaray and then we go to Chelsea.

“To absorb all these games without being rested when you have a little problem is very difficult.”

Asked whether Mertesacker and Kieran Gibbs would be ready for the visit of Tottenham in the Premier League on Saturday, Wenger added: “They will be alright.

“Gibbs couldn’t play because of a slight problem, Mertesacker is a bit on the edge and then we have no choice.”
