Wojciech Szczesny demands Arsenal response after Dortmund defeat
Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny urges the Gunners to pick themselves up after Champions League defeat
Wojciech Szczesny says Arsenal must pick themselves up after a disappointing 2-0 defeat at Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night.
Italy international Ciro Immobile broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time before Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang doubled the home side’s lead in the 48th minute.
We’ve got to pick ourselves up and get some momentum over the next couple of games at home
Danny Welbeck, who moved to Arsenal in a £16m deal from Manchester United on transfer deadline day, wasted a couple of half chances for the north London side at at Signal Iduna Park.
And Arsenal goalkeeper Szczesny urged the Gunners to respond to the setback in their remaining Champions League group-stage games.
“We’ve got six games to play. We lost the first one, which was an important one, but we’ve got to pick ourselves up and get some momentum over the next couple of games at home, and hopefully put ourselves in the mix,” Szczesny told Arsenal’s website.
Szczesny, who was criticised for a poor performance, added that Arsenal had no excuses despite the high standard of opposition.
“That’s no surprise in the Champions League. You get to play against the best teams in Europe,” Szczesny added.
“You expect them to play at this pace. We didn’t do it well enough so now we need to improve for the second game.”
