Arsene Wenger has dismissed Per Mertesacker’s claims that Arsenal have not been training hard enough this season.

Speaking after Wednesday’s last-gasp Champions League win over Anderlecht, Mertesacker admitted: “We are not at our best. Football-wise we lack a few things. We have to be honest to ourselves and train harder.”

However, Wenger does not feel that his side’s attitude in training is to blame for Arsenal’s stop-start form so far this term.

“I don’t know what he meant by that,” said Wenger, whose side travel to Sunderland on Saturday. “You have to be careful about the statements after the game.

“I think we train very hard and the spirit is right, the attitude is there. But I believe it’s more linked with confidence at the moment but I cannot fault the attitude.

“Where Per is right, you get confidence back completely by working harder.”
