Gareth Bale is once again the only British player to make the 23-man shortlist for the 2014 Fifa Ballon d’Or award.

The Wales international is joined by last year’s winner Cristiano Ronaldo and four-time world footballer of the year Lionel Messi.

However, there was no room for former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, who scored 31 Premier League goals last season as the Reds just missed out on the title.

The Uruguay international has just returned to action for new club Barcelona after serving a four-month ban for biting Giorgio Chiellini during this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

Three Chelsea players are in the running, with Manchester United and Manchester City both having one candidate each.

The five Premier League players nominated for the prestigious award are, Thibaut Courtois, Diego Costa, Angel Di Maria, Eden Hazard and Yaya Toure.

The final three-man shortlist will be revealed on 1 December, with the winner announced at an awards ceremony in Zurich on 12 January.
