Jamie Carragher says Liverpool desperately need Daniel Sturridge after the Reds striker suffered a fresh injury blow on Friday.

The 25-year-old broke down in his first training session back from a thigh injury, suffering a calf strain which is expected to keep Sturridge sidelined for a month.

The former Chelsea and Manchester City man, who scored 21 Premier League goals last season, hasn’t featured since August after picking up a thigh problem while on international duty.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction from the professionals, past and present, to Sturridge’s latest setback.

Former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor (@NeilMellor33) is gutted to hear of Sturridge’s latest injury blow: “I was looking forward to seeing Sturridge back playing this weekend for Liverpool. A huge blow to hear of this fresh injury setback.”

England legend Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) points to some irony: “News that @D_Sturridge has suffered another injury. Appears he may be out for longer than his old mucker @LuisSuarez9 …Football eh!”

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) admits the Reds are missing the England striker: “Just heard about the Sturridge injury, out for a month not happy desperately needed him back.”

Former Reds midfielder Dietmar Hamann (@DietmarHamann) hopes Mario Balotelli will step up the mark: “Big blow for LFC with Sturridge breaking down again. Time for Balotelli to come to the party and show that he can be super.”

Everton legend Peter Reid (@reid6peter) is being mischievous: “@DietmarHamann that wasn’t Roy Hodgson’s fault was it mate?”

Ex-Liverpool defender Rob Jones ‏(@RobjonesLFC2), sadly, knows all about injuries: “Gutted!!!!!! @D_Sturridge …..been there”

Finally, Plymouth star Marvin Morgan (@MarvinNMorgan): “#Sturridge I’m not a Liverpool fan but a fan of football”
