Carragher, Owen and more: Twitter reacts as Liverpool leave it late
Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen are thrilled for Mario Balotelli
Dejan Lovren scored a stoppage-time winner to complete Liverpool’s late comeback against Swansea City in the Capital One Cup fourth round.
Mario Balotelli netted his first goal in eight games and just his second strike of the season in the 86th minute to cancel out Marvin Emnes’s second-half opener at Anfield.
Swansea defender Federico Fernandez was sent off as the tie entered into injury-time before Lovren scored his first Liverpool goal to seal a 2-1 win.
And here is the best of the Twitter reaction from the professionals, past and present, in chronological order to a crazy end at Anfield.
Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann (@DietmarHamann) is thrilled to see the suffering Reds striker score: “Super Mariooooooooooo”
Ex-Liverpool winger Ryan Babel (@Ryanbabel) kept supporting the Reds through a League Cup storm: “LOVREN !!!!! #WalkON”
Reds legend Michael Owen (@themichaelowen) is happy to see the Italian answer his critics: “I said it was harsh to make Balotelli the scapegoat. Still don’t think he’s the answer though… Big result tonight. Ironic that Lovren was another player struggling to justify his price tag.”
Another Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) hopes this result can kick-start Reds’s season: “Not at the game but late goals give everyone at a club a massive lift. Well done Mario! Hopefully Lfc go bouncing into the newcastle game.”
Jan Aage Fjortoft (@JanAageFjortoft): “‘Only’ cup. But Liverpool and Dortmund wins could be important for turning their season….”
Finally, Liverpool legend Ian Rush (@Ian_Rush9) was happy with the Reds’s never-say-die spirit: “That’s the @LFC we know! Played right till the end of the game!! #YNWA”
