Ian Rush thinks that the return of Daniel Sturridge could make a huge difference for Liverpool at a vital stage of their season.

The Anfield legend was speaking to the Liverpool Echo in advance of the Reds’ trip to Queens Park Rangers this weekend.

And the man who scored 229 goals in two spells for the Reds said that Sturridge’s expected comeback from injury for that game could not have come at a better time.

We can’t rely on him all the time because there will be times when he’s not available, but there’s no doubt Liverpool are a better side with Daniel

“After an indifferent start this is a crucial stage of the season,” said Rush.

“We need to start climbing the table, starting with QPR on Sunday, and we’ve got those big European games coming up.

“This run of seven matches could make or break our season, and having Daniel back will certainly help.”

Rush may have been best known for his finishing, but the Welshman was keen to praise different aspects of Sturridge’s performances in a Liverpool shirt.

“It’s not just the goals Daniel gives you but all the other parts of his game,” he said.

“His movement and his close control is different class. He can come short and link up well with team-mates and he has that burst of pace to get in behind defenders too.”

And with the England man’s recent fitness problems now apparently behind him, Rush expects him to give Liverpool a significant boost.

“He was close to being fit before the international break so hopefully the extra two weeks he’s had has enabled him to get back to 100%,” Rush said.

“We can’t rely on him all the time because there will be times when he’s not available, but there’s no doubt Liverpool are a better side with Daniel.”
