Dejan Lovren has backed Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli to go on a goal-scoring run after his strike against Swansea City.

The Italy international came on as a second-half substitute after failing to net in his previous eight games in all competitions.

And Balotelli scored an 86th-minute equaliser in the Capital One Cup fourth-round tie to cancel out Marvin Emnes’s opener.

Lovren scored a stoppage-time to seal a 2-1 victory and book the Reds’s place in the League Cup quarter finals.

And the Croatia international is optimistic that Balotelli’s cup strike can provide the Italian with a platform to build on.

“I think it’s a relief for everyone but I was sure that Mario would score today or tomorrow so it was just a [matter of] time,” the Croatia international told Sky Sports News.

“Everyone has confidence in Mario, he’s working very hard in training, so it will come with time. When you score a goal all the heavy weight that was on your shoulders [is lifted] – and I think now his time will come.”
