Ex-Man United star baffled by Danny Welbeck substitution for Arsenal
Phil Neville questions Arsenal manager's decision to substitute Danny Welbeck
Phil Neville admits he has no idea why Arsene Wenger brought striker Danny Welbeck off during Arsenal’s 2-1 Champions League win over Anderlecht on Wednesday.
Wenger opted to substitute the England international in the 75th minute and replace him with Joel Campbell with his side trailing 1-0 in Belgium.
Late goals from Kieran Gibbs and Lukas Podolski earned the Gunners an important group-stage win.
But Neville was surprised to see former Manchester United striker Welbeck hauled off by the Frenchman.
“I couldn’t understand the substitution of Danny Welbeck,” Neville told BBC Sport. “Arsenal were very lucky in the end because they didn’t create that much.”
He continued: “If Arsenal had have lost tonight the knives would have been out for Arsene Wenger.
“In these games you have to play to the final whistle. As I said before, the young players do lose concentration and that is when the quality shines through.
“The character and spirit in the team is obviously there. But for 80 minutes I was thinking it was a poor performance.”
