Joey Barton has offered to help under-fire Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli.

The Italy international is facing a backlash after a disappointing performance against Real Madrid was exacerbated by his decision to swap shirts with Portugal centre-half Pepe at half-time.

I think he would benefit from a no bullshit approach. Would love to have a chat with him. @FinallyMario

Balotelli, who won the Premier League with Manchester City in 2012, has scored one goal in 10 appearances in all competitions following his move to the 18-time English champions from AC Milan in the summer.

And Queens Park Rangers midfielder Barton reckons Balotelli is capable of top-class performances, urging the 24-year-old to knuckle down and prove people wrong at Anfield.

“Balotelli getting a lot of criticism which is never going to help. What he needs is to get his head down and prove people wrong,” Barton wrote on Twitter.

“I myself have been one of those that have been highly critical of the man. When I spoke about him being a ‘myth’.

“He is obviously capable of top class performances, just look at any of Italy’s games in the last Euro’s. What he needs is more consistency.

“I spoke to him briefly in the tunnel before the match on Sunday and he seemed a genuine guy. He’d obviously seen what I’d said about him.

“We spoke briefly about it. And I stand by everything I said and told him that. We didn’t have an abundance of time but I would love to continue the conversation. I think he would benefit from a no bullshit approach. Would love to have a chat with him. @FinallyMario”
