Karim Benzema turned down the chance to join Manchester United in favour of a transfer to Real Madrid, according to Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas.

The France international left Lyon to join Madrid in 2009, the same summer in which the Red Devils sold Cristiano Ronaldo to the Spanish club for £80m.

And Aulas has revealed that the striker opted to move to the Bernabeu, even though the Premier League club had offered him a more lucrative deal.

“For a long time he wanted to play for Real Madrid, and when things began to fall into place we did not object,” Aulas told Canal+.

“Manchester United’s offer was superior, but he was given the opportunity to go where he wanted.”

The 26-year-old has scored five goals and made three assists for Los Blancos so far this season.
