Liverpool 0 Real Madrid 3: Player ratings as Cristiano Ronaldo stars

Player ratings as Cristiano Ronaldo delivers a world-class performance at Anfield

By Sam Rogers
Real Madrid

Simon Mignolet Never looked comfortable under the high ball and flapped at times. Could have perhaps done better with Benzema’s second but was unable to prevent the first two goals to his credit. 4/10

Glen Johnson Made a number of sniping runs down the right flank to no avail. Struggled to get the better of Marcelo. Faded as the night wore on. 5

Alberto Moreno Looked to test Arbeloa with runs down the left from the outset. Worked well in defence initially, but failed to pick up the runs of Isco and Rodriguez at times. 5

Martin Skrtel Organised the back four well with Lovren in the early exchanges before the hosts lost their head. Looked out of his depth as the match wore on. 3

Dejan Lovren Doubled up on Rodriguez well with Moreno. Lost his shape and organisation as Madrid turned the screw on the hosts. 5

Phillipe Coutinho A rare shining light for Liverpool. Worked tirelessly for the 65 minutes he was on the field. Sacrificed rather surprisingly for Markovic as Liverpool searched for a way back into the game. Hit the post from 25 yards shortly before the break. 7

Joe Allen Worked hard in the midfield and forced his way forward to have a couple of good efforts. Looked way out of his depth against a class Madrid side. 3

Jordan Henderson Worked hard to no avail in the middle of the park. Unable to cope with the control of Kroos and Modric. Replaced by Can with 25 minute to go. 5

Steven Gerrard Tested Casillas with an effort from range early doors. Otherwise absent despite working hard throughout. A mere passenger for most of the match. 3

Raheem Sterling Showed plenty of energy but is off the pace in terms of form. Not clinical enough in front of goal but was getting in the right positions. 4

Mario Balotelli Largely frustrating for the most part before being replaced by Adam Lallana at half-time. Was criticised for swapping shirts with Pepe at the interval. 4

Adam Lallana Replaced Balotelli at the break and looked lively down the left flank. Improved his side during his cameo. 5

Emre Can On for Henderson and helped to keep the score respectable. 4

Lazar Markovic Replaced Coutinho but made no impact. N/A

Real Madrid

Iker Casillas Shaky in the early stages at the set piece. Largely untested in the rest of the match. 6

Pepe Blocked a couple of key shots early. Filled the void left by Sergio Ramos’ injury though not as consistently as the Spaniard. Had Balotelli in his pocket and helped with an assist for Benzema. 8

Raphael Varane Looked comfortable at the standard of match he was in. Getting better with every match but was rarely tested here. 6

Marcelo Got forward with regularity, providing an attacking threat with Ronaldo. Not always a fan of tracking back but didn’t need to tonight. 7

Alvaro Arbeloa Lucky not to have been punished for a sloppy challenge on Sterling in the first 10 minutes. Grew into the game as it progressed. 6

James Rodriguez Looked lively early on despite a bad knock to the forehead. Delightful chipped pass to Ronaldo for the first goal. Not the finished article by any means but still a class act. 8

Toni Kroos A pleasure to watch for the neutral and barely got out of first gear such was the gulf in class. No pressure at all for the German. 7

Luka Modric Quashed any positivity from Liverpool with ease, settling into the defensive role comfort. Looks an asset in the hold. 8

Isco Delightful performance from the man in the side replacing the injured Gareth Bale. Magical at times and was afforded acres of space to punish the hosts. 7

Cristiano Ronaldo (Man of the match) Unsurprisingly a real force for his side. Virtually unplayable as he got the opener with a naughty chipped effort. World class and a class apart from his opponents. 9

Karim Benzema Was busy to his credit, trying to make himself a more desirable option going forward. Bagged a cool brace to silence his doubters for the time being. Brings the best out of Ronaldo. 9

Sami Khedira Came on to give Ronaldo a rest, never troubled. 5

Asier Illaramendi Got a run out to rest Kroos for El Clasico and had no time to really make an impact. 5

Nacho Came on for Marcelo late on. N/A
