Dominic Matteo believes Liverpool are facing a season-defining week ahead of their trip to Newcastle United on Saturday.

The Reds make the trip to St James Park on Saturday before a midweek clash against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in the Champions League.

I think after this week we will know which way Liverpool’s season is going

Rounding off a tough eight days, Premier League leaders Chelsea make the trip to Anfield on 8 November.

And former Liverpool defender Matteo feels the Reds will have a clearer idea of where they are after the three games.

“This is a real tough week ahead for Liverpool. This is a real defining point of the season for them,” Matteo told talkSPORT.

“You look at the next three games coming up, that is a real tough, tough week. I think after this week we will know which way Liverpool’s season is going.”

Matteo called on Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers to give veteran Rickie Lambert struggling Italy international Mario Balotelli.

“I think the fans want to see Lambert. I definitely want to see him given a chance,” he said.

“He has not really had much of a chance since he has been there. He needs game time and if you give Lambert the chances, he will take them.”
