Liverpool should build their team around Mario Balotelli, according to Peter Schmeichel.

The Italy international has been heavily criticised over the past week after a lacklustre performance against Real Madrid in the Champions League mid-week.

If you bring someone like Balotelli in, you have to build something around him

The 24-year-old has scored just one goal in 11 appearances in all competitions following a £16m move from AC Milan in the summer transfer window.

Brendan Rodgers kept faith with the struggling strike for the visit of Hull City on Saturday, and Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel feels the Reds aren’t helping their summer signing adjust.

“You have to think about who Mario Balotelli is replacing – Luis Suarez. They are two completely different players,” Schmeichel told BBC Radio Five Live.

“If you bring someone like Balotelli in, you have to build something around him, and it doesn’t look like Liverpool have. 22 chances he has missed this season, and it now becomes a confidence thing.”
