Liverpool transfers: Neil Mellor expects goalkeeper signing in January
Neil Mellor reckons Brendan Rodgers will sign competition for Simon Mignolet
Neil Mellor believes Liverpool will sign a new goalkeeper in the January transfer window despite cooling their interest in Victor Valdes.
Brendan Rodgers had been linked with a swoop for the free agent, but the former Barcelona goalkeeper is currently training at bitter rivals Manchester United.
I’m sure in January we’ll sign another keeper, which will help
Liverpool number one Simon Mignolet has been criticised this season after conceding 19 goals in 12 games in all competitions this season.
And former Reds striker Mellor believes Rodgers will sign a shot stopper to provide Mignolet with competition for a first-team place.
“One way in which we can improve things defensively is by much better communication,” Mellow wrote in Liverpool Echo column.
“If we played a behind closed doors friendly nowadays I’m not sure you’d hear too much going on in and around the back line.
“But if the likes of Jamie Carragher were involved, believe you me you’d hear him half way down the road in such a game!
“I know Simon Mignolet has come in for a bit of stick for not being dominant enough at times but he did well at QPR to be fair to him and made some really good saves.
“I think he just needs a bit of pressure on him for his shirt. It looks like we’ve cooled our interest in Valdes but I’m sure in January we’ll sign another keeper, which will help.
“Until then we can help ourselves a bit by simply shouting, and helping each other out.
“A bit more bark might help us add a bit more bite.”
