Mario Balotelli needs to accept that he will be goaded all the time, says Alan McInally.

The Reds striker helped inspired Liverpool to a 2-1 comeback victory over Swansea City in the League Cup on Tuesday, coming off the bench to score the equaliser.

However, the 24-year-old did clash with Swansea City midfielder Jonjo Shelvey in the closing moments of the fourth-round tie at Anfield.

And former Bayern Munich forward McInally urged Balotelli to learn to ignore the wind-up merchants and preserve his energy.

“He doesn’t need this ‘let’s have a fight [mentality]’. He does take the bait too easy,” McInally told Sky Sports.

“He’s using a lot of energy he doesn’t need to use – mental energy, looking over your shoulder all the time.

“He is a very talented footballer. He is going to get goaded all the time.

“On Saturday when he starts a game, an [opponent] will be like ‘get into Balotelli, make him upset and think about other things’ rather than what he’s good at, which is playing football.”
