Lukas Podolski fully committed to Arsenal, insists defender
Per Mertesacker says Lukas Podolski still remains fully committed to Arsenal despite his lack of playing time
Lukas Podolski still remains fully committed to Arsenal despite his lack of playing time, according to Per Mertesacker.
The Germany forward came off the bench to score Arsenal’s winner as Arsene Wenger’s men fought back from a goal down to beat Anderlecht in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
The 29-year-old World Cup winner has been linked with a move away from Emirates Stadium in recent weeks after finding his first-team opportunities limited this term.
But defender Mertesacker insists that Podolski is still committed to the cause.
“We are very happy to have Podolski and that he still has that motivation to get out there, give his all for the team when we need him and to score this goal,” said Mertesacker.
“He was still fresh and could decide the game with his left foot.
He added: “We stood with our back against the wall, but we always kept believing that we could get back in it.
“It is important that even when you’re not playing at your own level for 85 minutes, that you keep going and are there when it matters most, especially in the Champions League. We showed that here.
“We are very pleased with this result. Anderlecht did well and we only showed late in the game what we can do.”
