Robin van Persie declared that Manchester United can still catch Chelsea and win the Premier League title this season after his last-gasp equaliser earned a 1-1 draw with Jose Mourinho’s men.

After a goalless first half, Didier Drogba gave the Blues the lead at Old Trafford in the 53rd minute.

But United fought back and Van Persie drilled home a leveller in the final minute of stoppage time after Branslav Ivanovic had been shown a second yellow card for pulling back Angel di Maria.

Asked if United can catch Chelsea, Van Persie replied: “Of course we can. There’s still a long way [to go], it’s still early doors.

“There are nine or 10 games played so it’s not even half way through the season, so yes [we can].”

He continued: “Overall I think we had more chances than them. It’s a fair result, but we could have won today, so it’s a bit of a mixed feeling.”

The draw left United eighth in the table and 10 points behind Mourinho’s league leaders after nine games.

Van Persie continued: “If you come back in a game like this when you are 1-0 down with a minute to go, it gives us a boost.

“But if you look at the table, we should have won today. We wanted to win to gain some points. It didn’t happen but I think in the end we can be happy with a draw.

“In my opinion we’re getting better every single day basically, during training and if you look at the games as well.

“I think you can see that we are very comfy on the ball, everyone knows what they have to do and we are playing better.”
