Louis van Gaal felt that his side were fully deserving of their point after Robin van Persie’s late equaliser earned Manchester United a 1-1 draw with Chelsea.

After a goalless first half, veteran striker Didier Drogba gave the Blues the lead at Old Trafford when he swept home in the 53rd minute.

But Van Persie drilled home a leveller in the final minute of stoppage time after Branslav Ivanovic had been shown a second yellow card for pulling back Angel di Maria.

The draw left United 10 points behind leaders Chelsea in eighth place in the table, but Van Gaal was satisfied with the result.

“We kept together and I think we deserved it,” said Van Gaal.

“I have seen that we could have beat Chelsea, I’m saying that nearly every game but this is against Chelsea who are a top team and we were at least equal.

“We had a lot of chances but we don’t finish these chances, then Chelsea make the first goal and it becomes much more difficult as Chelsea play possession football, make the pitch big and we have to run and run.

“The most pleasing thing is we are showing again we are believing in making a goal in spite of the result being bad. 1-0 behind it is fantastic the players are running until the 90th minute to equalise or win.”
