Aleksander Kolarov says Manchester City must show Manchester United respect ahead of Sunday’s derby.

The Citizens lost further ground on leaders Chelsea at the weekend after a 2-1 loss to West Ham United at Upton Park on Saturday.

A day later, Robin van Persie did City a favour as the Dutch striker’s stoppage-time equaliser meant Chelsea left Old Trafford with just a point.

And Serbia international Kolarov underlined the importance of Manuel Pellegrini’s side beating United and getting back to winning ways in the derby.

“Manchester United are always [a threat],” Kolarov is quoted as saying by talkSPORT.

“They are a great club with a great history and if you don’t respect them a lot they are going to beat you.

“Obviously they have changed a lot of players and they are progressing now. I think it’s important that we win the derby.”

United are four points behind City after their 1-1 draw with Chelsea.
