Carlo Ancelotti has dented Manchester United’s hopes of signing Gareth Bale by insisting that the Wales international remains an “important” player for Real Madrid.

The Red Devils have been linked with a sensational £90m swoop for the former Tottenham Hotspur man in recent days as Louis van Gaal looks to bolster his attacking options at Old Trafford.

Bale’s future has been the subject of speculation amid suggestions that he has fallen down the pecking order at the Bernabeu following the arrival of James Rodriguez in the summer.

However, Madrid boss Ancelotti has poured cold water on claims that the 25-year-old’s role at the club is in doubt.

“It seems like many have forgotten that Gareth Bale scored in the Copa del Rey and Champions League finals [last season],” said Ancelotti.

“He is equally important as James Rodriguez and Isco.”
