Manuel Pellegrini would love to have Angel di Maria in his Manchester City side, according to Jamie Carragher.

The Argentina international has proven an instant hit in the Premier League following his British record £59.7m move to Manchester United from Real Madrid in August.

The 26-year-old attacking midfielder has scored three goals and made four assists in seven Premier League appearances, already justifying his huge price tag.

While the Liverpool legend feels Luke Shaw could help solve their left-back issue, Carragher reckons Pellegrini would like to have Di Maria in his side.

“Di Maria is the obvious choice,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“He’s started his United career like a house on fire and looks like he is going to create something every time he gets the ball, so you’d have to say him.

“As I mentioned, though, defence is their weakness, particularly with the second centre-back, but United aren’t blessed in that department either so I can’t really make a case for the likes of Chris Smalling or Marcos Rojo at the moment.

“If it wasn’t Di Maria, however, I’d go for Luke Shaw. I don’t think Gael Clichy or Aleksandar Kolarov are the best left-backs in the world, whereas I think Shaw, given a few more years’ experience, will become the best in that position in the Premier League.”
