‘Mauricio Pochettino backing Tottenham star Erik Lamela’
Phil Thompson believes Mauricio Pochettino has backed Erik Lamela
Mauricio Pochettino is backing Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Erik Lamela by continuing to play the Argentine, according to Phil Thompson.
The Spurs manager remained motionless as Lamela scored a brilliant rabana-like goal to break the deadlock in Spurs’s 5-1 victory over Asteras Tripolis in the Europa League on Thursday.
It prompted former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson and Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier to suggest Pochettino doesn’t rate the 23-year-old during Sky Sports’s Soccer Saturday show.
“He has got ability. We know he has. We’ve seen the goal. The fact that he hasn’t done it against a Premier League team means there will always be a question mark over him,” Le Tissier said.
“When you’ve got that much ability, you do need a manager who is going to back you. It doesn’t look like Pochettino really fancies the kid from his body language.”
However, former Liverpool captain Thompson rubbished the pair’s claims, defending Spurs manager Pochettino.
“He has been backed because he has been playing regularly,” Thompson told Sky Sports News.
“I’ve done a fair few of their games and to me, he’s not good enough.
“But the manager has had his back because he has kept playing him.
“He doesn’t do enough in a 90-minute games.”
