Manuel Pellegrini expects Manchester United to pose a threat with or without their captain Wayne Rooney at The Etihad on Sunday.

The England international has missed the Red Devils’s last three games after receiving a three-game ban for a reckless challenge on Stewart Downing last month.

They have enough important, creative players to replace him

But Pellegrini, whose Manchester City side lost 2-1 at West Ham United on Saturday, feels the Red Devils have plenty of alternatives to replace the 28-year-old.

“I think Rooney is a very important player for Manchester United but I think that big teams never depend on one player,” Pellegrini said.

“They have enough important, creative players to replace him.”

Despite talking about Rooney and United, Pellegrini is adamant that City won’t get distracted by the prospect of the derby when his side face Newcastle United in the League Cup on Wednesday.

“We are thinking just about Newcastle,” Pellegrini added. “When we finish with Newcastle, we will start thinking about Manchester United.

“We have three games in a row here at home in three competitions, so I think it is very important to be thinking just about the Capital One Cup and, after that, we will start thinking about Manchester United.”
