Alvaro Arebloa has made a long-awaited return to Anfield as the Real Madrid defender prepares to face Liverpool in the Champions League on Wednesday.
The former Spain international trained with his los Blancos team-mates at one of European football’s most iconic stadiums ahead of the Group B encounter.
Arbeloa, 31, spent two-and-a-half seasons at Liverpool before sealing a return to Madrid in a £5m deal in 2009.
The full-back was part of Rafael Benitez’s side that were famous 4-0 winners against the 10-time European champions at Anfield in the knockout stage in 2009.
And the Madrid defender took to Instagram to post a photo of an empty Anfield from Tuesday before another special European night on Merseyside.
Arbeloa posted on Instagram: “This is Anfield. But we’re Real Madrid #HalaMadrid”
Arbeloa ended his wait to win the Champions League in May after being part of the Liverpool side that lost 2-1 to AC Milan in Athens in 2007.
“Suffering injuries is hard but one of the most difficult moments for me was the defeat in the final in Athens with Liverpool,” Arbeloa said.
“I’ve lost in the semi-finals four times but I always thought about the missed opportunity in Athens.
“Going back to Liverpool after five years will be very special. I spent two wonderful years there and I got used to a new culture.
“I grew a lot, both as a player and as a person. It will be great but not just for me: I have told my team-mates to enjoy the match at Anfield as much as possible.”
