Liverpool captain affords himself a rest ahead of Real Madrid clash
Steven Gerrard afforded himself the luxury of putting his feet up after a busy day of training and media commitments ahead of the visit of Real Madrid.
The 34-year-old is expected to line-up against the Champions League holders at Anfield more than five years after he helped Liverpool seal a memorable 4-0 home win against Madrid.
And Gerrard, who has scored two goals in eight Premier League appearances this season, took to Instagram to share a couple of photos ahead of Wednesday’s mouth-watering clash.
He wrote: “Press an training done Home to get the feet up #realmadrid #championsleague #piccollage”
Earlier at his pre-match media conference, Gerrard recalled memories of that famous Champions League night at Anfield in 2009.
“It was a wonderful evening for myself and the team back in 2009, it was a fabulous team performance. We’re looking for the performance level to be similar tomorrow night. That’s the way it will have to be if we want a positive result out of the game.
“Nights like that live with you forever; when giants come into town like Real Madrid, if you manage to perform really well and get a good result they are fantastic memories.
“Looking back at that game, the reason we came out on top was because we were very aggressive with and without the ball, we pressed from the front and we also had a world-class talent in Fernando Torres who set the tempo on the night.
“We forced Real Madrid into mistakes and our finishing on the night was very clinical. We all know that individually and collectively we all need to perform very well against this Real Madrid team.
“With all due respect to the team back in 2009, Real Madrid have moved forward, progressed and improved – they showed last year that they are a fantastic team. We’ve got huge respect for the new Real Madrid team.”
