Wayne Rooney has hailed his friend John O’Shea after the Republic of Ireland captain scored a late equaliser against Germany on Tuesday night.

The 33-year-old Sunderland centre-half netted an injury-time leveller to cancel out Toni Kroos’s 71st-minute strike in the Euro 2016 qualifier.

O’Shea’s third international goal came on the night when he earned his 100th Ireland cap after making his debut against Croatia in 2001.

And Rooney, who won five Premier League titles and the Champions League alongside O’Shea, heaped praise on the Irish defender.

Rooney posted on Instagram: “Would like to congratulate my friend and former teammate John O’Shea on reaching 100 caps for Republic of Ireland last night and getting on the scoresheet! Well done mate!”

England legend Gary Lineker was quick to congratulate O’Shea on his dream 100th Ireland appearance following the centre-half’s dramatic strike against the world champions.

“Chuffed for John O’Shea. For the best moment of his international career to come at the end of his 100th cap is just reward for a great pro,” Lineker wrote on Twitter.
