Mario Balotelli and Steven Gerrard shared a joke at Melwood on Thursday as Liverpool trained ahead of their trip to Newcastle United.

The Reds are fresh from a dramatic 2-1 victory over Swansea City in the Capital One Cup fourth round at Anfield on Wednesday night.

The Italy international cancelled out Marvin Emnes’s opener with four minutes of normal time remaining before Dejan Lovren netted a stoppage-time winner.

Liverpool were rewarded for their spirited comeback with a quarter-final clash against Bournemouth, who are in fourth place in the Championship.

But first, Brendan Rodgers’s side must turn their attentions to a tricky game against Newcastle, who were 2-1 winners at White Hart Lane last weekend.

“Tottenham was an excellent result for them and I thought they were outstanding last night. They thoroughly deserved the win,” Rodgers said of Newcastle.

“I know Alan is a top-class manager. We all know there is pressure if you’re not winning games.”

Here is a selection of the best photos from Melwood.
